Walks for a first date in Birmingham

A good walk takes the pressure off. Here are some of my favourite places around Birmingham to take a first date.

A man and woman walking and talking along an autumn woodland path above the city

Autumn is a lovely time to walk around Birmingham. The leaves are turning, the air is fresh and the parks are quieter than in summer. If you're meeting someone new, a walk is one of the easiest first dates there is. Nobody has to book a table, and nobody has to sit opposite a stranger wondering what to say.

Why a walk works

When you're walking side by side, conversation flows more easily. There's always something to point out, and a quiet moment doesn't feel awkward. A few other reasons I like it:

  • It's free. No bill to split and no pressure to order something.
  • It's flexible. Keep it to half an hour, or stretch it out if it's going well.
  • It's public. Busy paths and open spaces are a comfortable place to meet someone new.

Parks in the city

Cannon Hill Park

A big, friendly park with a lake, open lawns and a café. It's easy to find and easy to get to, and there are plenty of benches if you'd like to sit and talk for a while.

Sarehole Mill and Moseley Bog

A historic watermill in Hall Green, linked with the young J.R.R. Tolkien, with a woodland walk at Moseley Bog close by. It's a gentle, atmospheric stroll, especially when the leaves are down. Check opening times if you'd like to see inside the mill.

Further out

Sutton Park

Heathland, woods and lakes in Sutton Coldfield, with plenty of routes to choose from. Pick a short loop for a first meeting and see how it goes.

The Lickey Hills

Woodland paths and hilltop views on the southern edge of the city. It's a little more energetic, so it suits people who enjoy a proper walk. Wear sensible shoes and check the weather before you set off.

By the water

Birmingham's canals are a lovely, flat option. The towpaths around Gas Street Basin are right in the middle of the city, busy and pretty, with cafés nearby for a hot drink afterwards. It's an easy first date if you'd like something gentle.

Making it work

  • Agree the length first. "Shall we do an hour or so?" takes the guesswork out for both of you.
  • Choose a meeting point you can both find. A park entrance or a café is better than somewhere vague.
  • Have a plan B for the weather. A nearby café means rain doesn't ruin the day.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Nobody is at their best with sore feet.
  • Stay safe. Stick to busy paths, make your own way there and tell a friend where you're going. Our guide to dating safely has more.

Afterwards

End with something simple...a coffee, a slice of cake or a pot of tea. It gives you a natural place to sit, and a chance to decide whether you'd like to do it again.
